Fed: Elderly woman dies in fire

CANBERRA, Dec 19 AAP - An elderly woman was killed in a fire at a Canberra senior citizens'
complex this morning.

The fire brigade was called to the complex in the southern suburb of Waramanga at about
0500 (AEDT) this morning after a fire broke out in a residential unit.

Residents were trying to put out the fire with hoses when the fire brigade arrived.

The roof of the unit collapsed during the blaze and fire officers later discovered
the body of the elderly woman inside.

A police spokesman said a report on the fire would be prepared for the coroner.

"It's essentially a matter for coronial investigation now," he said.
